No one can live without a heart. On the other hand, there are organs someone can live without, such as a gallbladder, spleen, appendix and colon. And because the heart is a vital organ, when something goes amiss, you might need to see a cardiologist.
At the office of The DOCS, we pride ourselves on our impeccable skills and cutting-edge expertise. And because of our high standards, you can feel confident that our cardiologists work with top-rated diagnostic tools and medical equipment that are designed for excellence.
Here’s an overview of how the heart works.
It’s split into two pumping systems: the right side and the left side. Each side has two individual chambers—the atrium and the ventricle—that pump the blood. Those four chambers have a special type of muscle called myocardium, which carries out the main thrusting work. It relaxes to fill with blood and then contracts to pump the blood.
The right side takes in low-oxygen blood from your veins and propels it into your lungs. The blood then fills up with oxygen and discards carbon dioxide. The left side gets oxygen-loaded blood from your lungs and forces it into the arteries throughout your body.
The four chambers work together to keep your body filled with that ultra-important oxygen-rich blood.
Your heart’s electrical system maintains the timing of the pumps and keeps your heart beating in a regular rhythm, adjusting the pace as needed. Problems within the electrical system can cause an arrhythmia (the chambers aren’t beating properly), tachycardia (the heart is beating too quickly) or a bradycardia (the heart is going too slowly).
We at the office of The DOCS pride ourselves on our never-ending ability to fulfill our mission of providing superior patient care.
