Sports injuries are those traumas that commonly occur during active recreational activities, exercise, or on the playing field. They usually involve damage to the musculoskeletal system including muscles, bones, and other tissues such as cartilage. The most common sports injuries include anything from muscle strains and tears, ligament tears, to damaged tendons, dislocated joints, and fractured bones. Strains often occur with excessive twisting, pulling, or tearing a tendon or muscle. Symptoms of a strain may include pain, muscle spasm, and/or a loss of strength. While some strains are mild, all strains, especially severe ones, should be treated professionally. It’s important to keep in mind that sprains may include ligament stretches or tears, or in extreme cases also involve ruptures to supporting ligaments.
As far as joints are concerned, the knees are the most commonly injured joints in the body. Although a knee injury can range from mild to severe, all are usually painful and limit functionality. Another common sports injury is compartment syndrome. It may be caused by a traumatic injury like a fractured bone or blow to the thigh or by repeated hard blows or overuse. It affects the compartments found in many parts of the body that are formed with a tough fascia membrane around muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. The muscles become enlarged and fill the compartment to the point of interfering with the nerves and blood vessels. This syndrome may also damage the muscle. To manage the pain, ice packs, compression, and elevation are suggested for immediate care. Pain medicines, steroid injections, immobilizing the injury, and rest may also be recommended as part of pain management. You can rest assured that you are in the best of hands at our office. Whatever the nature of your injury may be, we provide the care required to alleviate your discomfort and help get you back in the game.
