At the office of The DOCS, we often recommend a stress test to obtain information about the condition of your heart and circulatory system. Because the exercises involved in this test cause your heart to pump faster and work harder, it enables us to detect the presence of certain cardiac conditions. As skilled and experienced cardiologists, we monitor your cardiac health and provide compassionate care to protect your health and overall well-being.
Stress testing examines how your heart is functioning during physical exertion. This is often done while running on a treadmill. A stress test is typically ordered if you have an irregular heartbeat or to see if other symptoms, like shortness of breath are heart-related. We may also recommend a stress test to assess your level of fitness, and to see if previous treatments are working. For patients who are not able to run on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bike, we may still perform a version of this test by providing an IV drug that mimics exercise by increasing blood flow to your heart.
We understand that every patient is unique, and will review your medical history, as well as listen to your heart and lungs, to design a stress test that will be both appropriate and provide relevant information. We’ll also evaluate your heart rate and breathing once you finish the test to see how and if everything returns to normal. If your stress test is indicative of coronary artery disease, an arrhythmia, or your symptoms continue to worsen; we’ll discuss further diagnostic tests such as an angiogram. Your heart health and overall well-being are our top priorities, and we provide the attentive care you require.
