When it comes right down to it, all human life can be narrowed down to a single sound: the heartbeat.
Heart rhythm is vital to the function of the heart, upon which all other metabolic systems rely. The heartbeat is literally the difference between life and death.
There are times, however, when heart rhythm doesn’t keep the time it should. It can beat too quickly or too slowly, or even be irregular. At the office of The DOCS our skilled professionals are experts at diagnosing cardiac problems — providing the advanced treatment needed to restore and maintain good heart health.
Pacemakers are placed in patients who have slow heart rhythms. For example, damage to the heart's electrical system from a heart attack, or deterioration with age could cause someone's heartbeat to go so slowly that they could become dizzy or pass out.
Pacemakers are implanted under the skin in the upper part of the chest, and connected to wires that are threaded through veins into a patient's heart. It delivers impulses to the heart at approximately two- and-a-half to five volts.
The question many people have when facing a pacemaker implantation is how it will affect their lifestyle. The good news is that most patients can go through their day-to-day routines and, in most cases, it won’t limit them from doing sports and exercise, including strenuous activities. Patients will generally feel the device under the skin, but most are unaware that the device is functioning. Further, the pacemaker is monitored by our physicians, allowing them to adjust the many settings of the device as needed, such as the pacing rate.
If you suffer from heart rhythm irregularities, the office of The DOCS is here to help.
